Overview
I haven’t had my hair cut in years as I had a difficult time finding an accessible salon, I also had negative experiences of other salons that were accessible but were too rough or didn’t produce good results. I was so happy with the service at MacIntyres Perth Road. I was offered a cup of tea and they had soy milk! They were gentle washing my hair and checked in that my neck was ok without me ever needing to ask them to be careful. The offered me assistance, they seemed confident when offering support and it felt genuine and not awkward at all. My hair is very long (past my hips) and they got all the shampoo out without being rough at all. Leanne cut my hair and was so sweet and did such a great job. It’s been about 6 years since I was this happy with my experience getting my hair cut.
Transport & Parking
The salon is on the Perth Road, close to the universities and about a ten min walk from town. There are many bus stops on this road, there was on street parking for blue badge holders.
Access
Entry is through an (almost) flat door way. The reception is right there when I went in, the desk was very high but staff were helpful and came round to get my card etc. There was space for me to ‘park’ my big powerchair amd transfer- they did say I could stay in my chair but the back is very high and it would have been difficult for them and I probably would have gotten hair in all the nooks in my chair! There was plenty space for me to move around easily. The seating area is on the left when you enter.
Toilets
I didn’t use the toilet so can’t comment. There is a doctors surgery at the top of the street with an accessible toilet and an accessible cafe nearby also.
Staff
The staff were so friendly, helpful and sensitive. They offered support appropriately and listened well. They were gentle without me asking which I appreciate, I have many experiences of neck damage from hairdressers pulling at my head, and bleeding scalp from hairdressers using their nails when washing the shampoo out my hair, to just pain and stress at these appointments. These girls have restored my faith in hairdressers and made me feel confident to get my hair cut more often.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
For a haircut, wash, blow dry, treatment and curl it was £35 which I felt was a good price. I only had to book 4 days in advance. Apart from the accessibility being really good and the staff being great, I’m also really happy with how my hair looks, so it was a success all round!
