Overview

Not sure what to expect I planned a visit to the National Maritime Museum. I was pleasantly surprised as it was very large but incredibly accessible for me as a wheelchair user. Full of interesting exhibits from a replica ship through to artworks, nautical tools and equipment and lots more.

Transport & Parking

I walked to the Museum as I wheeled along the footpaths and cycle ways to get there from my hotel by Central Station.

Access

Arriving I looked for an accessible toilet. Quickly sorted as there was one just off the main entrance lobby. I went and got my ticket and a plan of the site and set off. The museum is set out in four sections as it's a square building with a courtyard in the middle. The sections are named after the compass points. Each section has lifts to get you up and down between the many floors. The surfaces were easy to wheel over, there were some amazing views from the low set windows, and the signage was a good height to be able to see and follow. Leaving the building and going out on to the jetty was made easy with a ramp for wheelchair access. Going up to the East Indiaman, replica ship, was made easy and included a platform lift to go up and onto the vessel! I enjoyed visiting, with places to sit and rest a while, opportunities to grab a coffee, great toilets, and a calm atmosphere it was fascinating.

Toilets

Very good, clean and spacious, disabled loos were located throughout the musuem.

Staff

Help and friendly staff made visiting easier and nothing was too much trouble.
