Overview

I arrived by train via Manchester Airport Station. From the platform, it was a quick wheel to the lift up to the Skybridge, a long corridor leading to Terminal 2. There are travelators along the way, which I’d suggest using, as it’s quite a distance. At the end of the Skybridge, I encountered some building works, leading to a short diversion around to the front of Terminal 2. Inside, the terminal contrasts with the exterior, appearing somewhat futuristic. I visited solely to review accessibility, so I can’t speak to the airside experience, but it’s an impressive airport with several accessible toilets and a well-equipped Changing Places toilet.

Transport & Parking

The terminal is served by Manchester Airport Station, which provides bus, rail, and tram links to the airport. There are also dedicated long and short stay car parks at the airport in addition to valet parking.

Access

4

The terminal is accessed via automatic sliding doors. There's level access throughout the terminal building, with clear signage. The terminal is busy, but large enough that you don't feel swamped by people rushing off to their destinations. The Special Assistance area is located on the right wall and has plenty of seating for those who might need it. There are wheelchairs located nearby and an assistance desk, which does not have a lowered counter or induction loop. There's a Starbucks and a café further along the same wall, as well as several seats located throughout the terminal. A few of the check-in desks have hearing loop symbols, but I didn't see any alternative communication formats.

Toilets

3.5

I popped into the accessible toilets in Zone G, which were rather easy to find due to clear signage, and the huge glowing wheelchair user symbol on the wall. I used the toilet on the back wall and found it to be spacious and easily able to accommodate additional people if needed. The red cord hung to the floor—love it. There are grab rails on either side of the sink and toilet, with space for a right-side transfer. The toilet seat has a soft backrest, and the flush is located on the left when seated. A RADAR key is not required to access the toilet, and the door, which opens outward, is locked from the inside by turning a knob on the door. It also features a privacy curtain, which is a lovely touch. The other toilet in this area was in use. I also visited the Changing Places Toilet, which is located next to the Jet2 check-in, on the wall opposite the large glowing V. There's an unnecessary barrier to entry. Rather than requiring a RADAR key or featuring a buzzer, there's a phone outside of the toilet. You need to pick up the receiver, dial a number, wait for an answer, then ask to enter the toilet, at which point you're given a code to enter into a keypad on the door. The door opens outward and is locked from the inside by raising the handle. Overlooking the access issue, the toilet itself is fully equipped with just about everything one could need. There's a large adjustable changing bed with waterproof sheeting and a shower—however, the showerhead was on the floor under the bed. Grab rails have been installed on either side of the toilet and the large adjustable sink. A colostomy shelf has also been provided, and you'll find two portable privacy screens. There's a red emergency cord, which hung freely, located on the right of the toilet when seated.

I spoke to a gentleman at the Special Assistance area in Zone D, who was eager to help and informed me about the accessibility features in his area.

Many thanks for visiting and reviewing. I’m travelling from T2 next month and will be using my scooter, and was really nervous about it. I can relax a bit now, thank you!
