Overview

Located very close to Dundee’s newly-modernised railway station, RSS Discovery and V&A Dundee, the Malmaison is a stylish hotel with well-equipped accessible rooms. The staff could not be more helpful.

Transport & Parking

Can’t comment on parking, as we arrived by train. The hotel is within sight of the station. Getting there involves crossing some busy roads, but there are pedestrian crossings and using them we discovered that Dundee believes in making drop-downs smooth & easy to negotiate. We think a delegation from City of Edinburgh Council should check this out and learn how it’s done.

Access

Don’t be put off by the steps on the corner of the building. There is level access on the Dock Street facade of the hotel. The outer doors are automatic and the receptionists were quick to open the inner doors for us. All levels are accessible by lift. Corridors are wide enough to make navigation easy and the first floor Brasserie has level access, with an adjacent accessible loo. We were asked to fill in a PEEP form - evidence that the management takes the safety of differently-abled guests seriously.

Toilets

We didn’t check out the accessible loo on the landing near the Brasserie. The one in our en-suite bathroom was well-equipped with grab rails and not too high. There was adequate space to manoeuvre and an adjacent accessible wash hand basin at a sensible level for a wheelchair user.

Staff

Charming, friendly and helpful. Staff were quick to open fire doors when they saw us coming and very responsive to requests. We had been allocated an accessible room with a sunken bath which wasn’t suitable but we were quickly moved to an accessible room with an en-suite wet room shower with a shower seat.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

The bed was a bit high for Wheelchair Girl - a problem we’ve encountered in other hotels - but we travel with a folding bed rail, a patient turner and a folding footstool, so we were OK. It’s amazing what you can strap to the back of a wheelchair! In all other respects this was a great place to stay and we very much enjoyed meals in the Brasserie. The location is brilliant and the decor is darkly stylish, with a nice local touch - a framed picture of Denis the Menace over the bed.
