Overview
I am a powered wheelchair user with poor speech. A disabled friend recommended the Magpie. They accepted my booking by email which avoids the inevitable queues. Our party of 10 all enjoyed our meals chosen from an extensive menu. The staff were friendly and helpful to me in particular. The toilets are located on the top floor which is accessible for my wheelchair in the lift.
Transport & Parking
Disabled parking is available outside the Magpie. The only snag is that the steps leading to the restaurant front door prevent a wheelchair user from passing from the town centre side to get to the lift. So to find a dropped kerb proceed along the road, which is pedestrians only during the day, past the Magpie entrance, use the dropped kerb outside the arcade and return to the take away. I side the take away is the lift.
Access
The lift is tucked away inside the take away shop which is under the same ownership. If there is a queue it isn't easy to see but I had no problems getting into the lift.
Toilets
The toilet is easily reached using the lift. It was clean and had room enough for me to transfer over.
Staff
I have swallowing problems as well as problems handling cups and cutlery. A mug was quickly found for me which is easier for me to handle. I took my own cutlery. The waitress had a good sense of humour and the service was good despite the place being very busy.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
I have lived near Whitby for over 30 years and the Magpie has always had a good reputation. Back in 2011 when I became a wheelchair user I assumed wrongly that I could no longer use the Magpie. It took a conversation with a disabled friend from York for me to find out about the lift. It's the extensive menu, sensible prices and well presented meals that make the restaurant such a success.

The toilets are accessible! The lift goes to the 2nd floor where the toilets are.
