Overview

Proberbly one of the most beautiful and popular villages in Scotland. Luss, originally named Clachan dhu (the dark village) stands on the West Bank of Loch Lomond, in the region of Argyll and Bute. Luss lies on the shores of the freshwater lake of Loch Lomond, (Loch being far more romantic than lake,) and means (lake of the Elms) which is 22.6 miles long, and by the surface area, is the largest lake in Great Britain. , and contains thirty or more islands, surrounded by hills, including Ben Lomond, which is 3,196 feet high, overlooking Luss. Overall, it is a scenic area, visited by thousands each year, no matter the season. On the far side of the loch, it is overlooked by one of the Munro,s Ben Lomond. An explanation of what a Munro is will be given on another review of ours later on. Christianity arrived here in the 16th century, and there are a few early medieval monuments that can still be seen in the churchyard. The present church was built in 1875, and holds over a hundred weddings each year. There are quite a few grade B or C listed buildings to see, and the Luss cottages on Pier road are very picturesque, and the village attracts more than 750,000 visitors each year,while many of you may remember it as the setting for the popular TV drama, “Take the High Road” The pier itself invites you to enjoy a lovely trip on the loch itself. There is a large car park here, with a small gift shop, snack bar, and public toilets. Then it’s a bit of a walk as you head towards the village. It is best to turn right as you leave the toilets, on the road thats leads past the bungalows, then turn left and head towards the main part of the village. Now follow the crowds by taking the sharp left on the pier sign, and pass the war memorial to then pass lovely cottages and a few gift shops, to reach the shore of Loch Lomond. A large carpark, level, with gift shop and snack bar, and toilets.

Access

The car park is level, with disabled bays, (read their notice board for disabled use) and the walk down to the Loch is reasonably level, but easy enough for chairs, but bear in mind it’s a popular attraction so can be crowed at times, you would then struggle to get into the gift shops.

Toilets

A public toilet is available with disabled facilities. If we remember it has a radar key operation, but at least public facilities may be used if you do not have a key yet. There are grab rails and pull cord, and it’s a reasonable size inside, most chairs can use the toilets.

Staff

Busy, but everywhere was friendly and helpful.
