Overview
This review is attending the Disability and Intersectionality discussion panel at Pankhurst House, LSE. This was a special event. On the panel were Umber Ghauri, Christina Lee, Kym Oliver and Lucy Webster. The meeting was chaired by Dr Emma Spruce. The venue had very good access.
Transport & Parking
Nearest tube station is Holborn, but it is not step free. Green Park is the nearest step free tube station. There are several buses that stop close to LSE.
Access
Pankhurst House where the event was held had excellent disabled access. There were automatic entrance doors and reception staff were available to quickly and easily give me access through the automatic gate into the main building. The event took place in a lecture room on the ground floor, with step free access and a ramp to the stage area. The event had a BSL interpreter and there was captions. After the event there was lift access to an upper floor room where a drinks reception was held. There was a choice of drinks and snack available. There was some seating.
Toilets
I used the toilet on the upper floor where the drinks reception was held. The accessible toilet was spacious and clean with grab rails. The emergency cord was wrapped around the grab rail and I untied it.
Staff
When I booked I noted that seating was on a first come first served basis, which I would struggle with, so I contacted the organisers and they replied promptly and positively. Then later there was even a follow up email. This meant when I arrived I was given priority to enter the room and thereby avoided queuing. Staff at Pankhurst House reception desk were friendly and proactive in assisting me through the entry gates.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
The event was amazing. There were 4 very powerful and confident disabled women speakers. The event was inspirational as it was great to see disability, gender, race, LGBT, class, etc being discussed and highlighting the complexity of needs and level of discrimination faced by disabled community.
