London without the overload

Overview

I love this airport for London access, but it has a few challenges. It's a very small airport with 5 or so check in desks downstairs and departure area upstairs. Distances are very small for an airport, the lift to departures is mere feet from the check in area and the upstairs not that much larger. You can stay independent right to the gate if you prefer to do that, just ask at the bag drop for a tag, let them know you will go through on your own, then meet them at the gate. Here's the big downside - they don't have a lift, they have a stairclimber. That's why I knocked off two stars. You go down in a lift with the assistance staff, then you have to transfer at the bottom of the steps, and two members of staff will bump you painfully up the steps on an electric stair climber, which ratchets up one step at a time.

Transport & Parking

Don't know anything about parking or taxis, I've always got onto the DLR. The train station is a good 800m away on a gentle uphill (from airport to station) slope on tarmac surface. Sometimes the staff will A lift takes you to the platform. This part of the network is very accessible indeed as it's all the new Jubilee extension and DLR, so you can roll on and off trains. For central London, you can get the DLR to the Jubilee line and go to Green Park, just be sure to look for a sign somewhere on the plaform area with a wheelchair symbol as only SOME of the carriages are level access at Green Park, and you will need to have got on in the middle of the train.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

Keep meaning to mention with these airport reviews, I don't much recommend using the mobile app boarding passes with assistance, as people keep taking your phone away for ages to double check access things. The boarding pass app forces the screen onto full brightness and they will merrily walk around with the screen on while they have discussions between themselves, draining out your battery life as they go.
