Overview

This small Tudor home is a very special place, so peaceful, and the gardens have a large lawned area with seating. Seating in the garden and house too. Accessible rooms are The Great Hall, a room just off that, a grand Parlour, a kitchen and a back kitchen. Small interesting displays inside. There are two cafes. One is waitress service and the other is not. Both are quite small. The food is excellent - but we have only tried the one with the waitress service. Food is home made on the premises. There may be a wait as it is very popular, and if you go later they may well have sold out of some items. There are two more floors but these are only for the very fit! The house is famous for being crooked as owners in the past unwisely added a long gallery on the top, which has had to be shored up! The house is also famous for the many windows it has, a display of wealth from the original owners, because glass was very expensive. The grounds are great for spotting wildlife and there is a lovely moat which gives a tranquil feeling. We saw lots of ducks and ducklings. There is also a chapel up a few steps. We ended our visit with an ice cream on the lawn, where chairs and tables are set out, with ample space for wheelchair. The garden paths are all bonded gravel, and quite wide. The shop at reception has changed since we were there last. It is now stocked with nicely displayed pre-loved books, and some jewellery and craft items, all very affordable. They welcome donations.

Transport & Parking

5

We went by car. There are six disabled spaces close to the reception building. However, the car park is level, so easy to manage.

Access

4.5

Small slope up to reception building, and small slope to exit. Reception building is all one level and shop easy to manage. Level wide path up to the house. (about 50 yards) House door is level entry but one has to cross a small cobbled courtyard to enter. Plenty of seating in the house. One ramp where needed into the kitchen. The house is mostly unfurnished so plenty of room for wheelchairs and walkers. Hard floors. There are upper floors but one needs to be very fit to access them. However, in the great hall there is a visual presentation to see at the right height for a wheelchair, and there was also a chair placed there. The gardens were accessible with some slopes as well as steps.

Toilets

4.5

There was one accessible toilet, just through main reception. The toilets near the house are not accessible. No changing places facilities. Toilet was clean and there was just about space to turn a wheelchair round. All grab rails good and sink at wheelchair level.
