Overview
This is a beautiful venue in the heart of Leith, which has a wonderful, varied history. In short it closed in 1988 and reopened again in its sorry but well love state in 2016. So as you can imagine access is pity non-existent, I have visited a few times for some brilliant gigs, such as Mogwai, Joan as Policewoman and Young fathers. I have not put on a review as I know the venue is desperate for funding and once they get it I'm pretty sure accessibility will improve.
Transport & Parking
Public transport is pretty great with Lothian buses 7, 14, 21 stopping outside and a 10 around the corner. I think you can get a taxi up to the gates. I am not sure about private parking or blue badges.
Access
From what I recall the whole ground floor is step free. Upstairs where the only sitting is has no lift and therefore a bit inaccessible. It would be great if all staircases had handrails and lighting could be better. I know there’s no accessible platform in the downstairs area which could be handy. Bar area was pretty high too.
Toilets
I think there was an accessible loo. For the men’s I remember that there was a portaloo cabin that had steps up with a door which is rather awkward. I always felt I had to be really careful and not be pushed off by the door.
Staff
Very friendly and happy, it was obvious they wanted to be there and spoke to me cheerfully.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
Can't wait for this amazing venue to get its funding and become accessible for more people :)
