Overview

La Ranilla is the old Fishermen’s District in Puerto de la Cruz. There are lots of restaurants in this area with inviting alfresco tables in padestriansed streets or squares and some . The area has colourful buildings with balconies as well as a number of charming cottages. There is also lots of street art, with lots of fascinating murals.

Transport & Parking

La Ranilla area is near to Plaza Charco, one of the towns main squares, and one where you can be dropped off by taxi or pick one up from the rank. I travelled by taxi, but I think the bus station is near by but I think this would invole walking up a hiil to get to it. From Plaza Charco it is a level walk of a couple of minutes to La Ranilla.

Access

While most of Puerto de la Cruz is quite hilly, much of La Ranilla area is on level ground. There are 3 long, parallel street which are on all the flat. Calle el Lomo, is the long, level, street which has been padestrianised. Also parallel is Calle Mequinez, but cars also have access to part of the street. Between the two roads is Plaza Benito Pérez Galdós, a charming, small square surrounded by restaurants. The third street is Calle San Felipe but I didnt explore this street while I was there, but behind this street the ground starts to rise upwards. Some of the side streets connecting these three roads have narrow or no pavement. I visited the area twice during the day time and personally I did not notice much road traffic so I felt safe walking on the road, where there was no pavement, however please take care if you visit.

This was my favourite part of the town. It was easy to walk around, the area is very charming and interesting to explore. Also in the area is the Archeology Museum, unfortunately when I visited in November 2018, it was closed for renovation. Highly recommend. There are a couple of budget hotels (not hostels) offering private rooms in the area, but as I didn't stay there I'm unable to comment about them.
