Overview

Small, ground floor, 3 bedroom guest house in the heart of the Old Town Las Palmas. The house is in traditional Spanish style, beautifully furnished with rooms located round a small courtyard. The attractions (cathedral, museums, Christopher Columbus house, traditional restaurants and cafes) of the old town are within a 5 - 10 minute walk and are located in a pedestrianised area where there are some cobblestone streets. 20 - 30 drive from Gran Canaria Airport.

Transport & Parking

I arrived here by taxi which stopped directly outside the house. There are lots of buses but I'm unsure how close to the house they stop. Taxis are reasonably priced in Las Palmas and I used them to get about. I would usually walk into town in the morning and get a taxi back at the end of the day and this worked well for me. The accommodation is in Vegueta (Old Town Las Palmas) and some of the streets, including the one the house is on, are on a slight slope. After leaving the house it was a five minute walk to the cathedral but one of the streets had a very narrow pavement, which wasn't quite wide enough to walk comfortably with my crutch. However the neighbouring streets are quiet so don't be put off by it.

Access

There is one step up from street level into the house and then all the guest house accommodation is on the same level. Many of the doors are double doors so they are wide and spacious. There are three bedrooms, each of which have a large en suit bathroom, with shower. I can only comment about the facilities in my room but my shower was an open cubicle with curtain and there was one step up to get into it. The floor of the shower cubicle was textured so it did not feel slippery. The accommodation is spacious and in the communal areas there is an open top courtyard with comfortable seating, dinning room and lounge for guests to use.

Toilets

The toilet was in a spacious en suit bathroom. It did not have grab rails or an emergency cord. The bathroom was very clean and tidy. The chair in the bedroom could be put in the bathroom to assist with transfers from the toilet and I'm sure Ana, the owner, would move it into the bathroom if you required it.

Staff

There was exceptional staff service. Ana is the owner, who speaks excellent English, was there when I arrived. She spent over half an hour with me when I first got there getting me a drink and talking with me. She gave me a map and showed me the quickest way to get into the town centre and also her own travel booklet with recommendations of what to do and restaurant suggestions. Ana shows a genuine interest in her guests and proactively looks at ways to assist them. She wrote down for me instructions for me to give to the taxi driver for getting me back to the house quickly if I was feeling tired. She made time at breakfast and in the early evening to check with the guests if they are ok and offer recommendations or assistance if required. She also said I could call her during the day if I needed help when I was outside. I felt really well cared for and looked after throughout my stay.

The cost of the accommodation also includes breakfast. Guests sit round a communal table where breakfast is served. The food is delicious, plentiful and varied. Overall this accommodation is a good choice for people with limited mobility who can manage one or two steps, who use a shower and who don't require grab rails and who are looking for a small and special place to stay.
