Overview
The Keukenhof is a must see if you are in the Netherlands between the last week in March and the second week in May. It is one of the largest flower gardens in the world. Situated on 79 acres, over 800 varieties of tulips and millions of other unique flowers are on display from bulb growers all around the country and other parts of the world. There are also various exhibitions and events occurring during the season, making this an ideal place for the entire family to enjoy. It is a great location to explore for a few hours, or the entire day until the gates close at 7:30 in the evening.
Transport & Parking
Public transportation by train and bus to the Keukenhof is available from Schipol airport, Amsterdam, Haarlem, and Leiden. Combi-tickets are available on the Keukenhof main website. Not all busses and trains are accessible for wheelchairs, so it is recommended to check for accessibility prior to your visit. For a more direct route and to avoid transfers, Accessible Travel Netherlands can arrange accessible taxis for you in advance. If you are arriving by car, arriving as early as possible (the venue opens at 8:00 am) to ensure a shorter distance from the parking area to the front gate.
Access
Accessibility at the Keukenhof is fantastic, but it can get very crowded with tourists so for the maximum enjoyment it is best to arrive when they open at 8:00 in the morning. Also, sometimes it is a bit less crowded in the late afternoon. To avoid waiting lines at the entrance, it is recommended that you purchase tickets in advance online from their website keukenhof.nl. Most paths are wide and accessible for wheelchairs. They are mostly flat, but are sometimes bendy or go a bit upwards. Regular and electric wheelchairs are available for rent up to a day in advance through the main Keukenhof website. The restaurants are also fully accessible. Boat rides are not accessible for wheelchairs, but you can ride them if you can get out of your wheelchair and onto the boat with a bit of help. The boat tour is available in various languages through headphones that are provided. Be sure that the headphones provided are working properly before the boat departs. Visually impaired visitors can enjoy the scents and sounds from the various gardens. There is even a petting zoo that you can visit. Dogs are also allowed in the gardens as long as they are on a leash.
Toilets
Accessible toilets are available in every building except for the Japanese Garden and Adjacent forest.
Staff
Staff members are friendly and willing to help. During busy hours, it can take longer to get the help you need.
