Overview
This venue host these two separate exhibitions the Maritime Museum covers the basement floors 1,2, and 4 the slavery museum is on the 3rd floor. Both these exhibition have a wide range of exhibits on display and during our visit they were in the process of setting up more displays in the Maritime Museum. They both have a story to tell the Slavery Museum covers this issue and there are a number of items on display some of these relate to the way slaves were treated and as a result this floor is not for everyone in fact we were only on this floor a few minutes. The Maritime museum has figure heads from the 1800s and covers the history of the sea including both World Wars and up to date. There is a wide range of material on display including models , paintings and navel uniforms etc.
Transport & Parking
There are 3 Blue badges spaces about 150 yards away as the museum web site tells you however this is a very popular venue and these do fill up quickly even when the schools are in as was the case during our visit. The nearest public Transport is some distance away outside the gates of the Albgreeert docks and as a result is a good bit to walk
Access
The museum building is in one of the buildings that former the World Famous Albert dock this of course is a very old dock and as a result there is a mixture of paved areas and cobble stoned roads and walking areas with in the docks this of course is very bumpy if you are in a wheelchair. When the cobble stones are wet because of rain then it can be very slippery. There is good signage on old fashioned St corner signpost to keep you right there is a good wide stone ramp to the door of the museum and you enter via a good wide glass door and then a second inner door. There is an information desk in the left hand corner as you enter. There is two lifts to all floors these are big and well lit and there is green lights on the edge of the doors when they open that makes It very clear the space you have or the width of the door. There is a notice at the lift doors that informs people that wheelchairs and prams should have priority in the lifts. There is space to move around all of the floors of the museum
Toilets
There are Wheelchair accessible Toilets on all the floors so you are always near one at all times the museum also has a fantastic Changing Places Toilet this is on the 2nd floor and is at the far end of the exhibition area if you turn left as you come out of the lift. We were however disappointed at the lack of signage for the Changing Places Toilet in the area it is located. A radar Key is required for the toilets
Staff
There are staff members on all floors they are walking about through the exhibition and they can direct you to any area that you might be looking for or to answer questions
Anything else you wish to tell us?
This is a very large museum and it can be difficult to cover it all in one visit
