Overview

Inglestone House is a delightful bed and breakfast which offers 2 step free bedrooms. A large Georgian townhouse right in the centre of Kelso. Its step free entrance faces onto the main square. It's perfect for access the town's many cafes, restaurants, pubs and shops. Although it is in the town centre the accommodation is peaceful. Kelso is a charming, historic small town on the banks of the River Tweed with an ancient Abbey. It is also a good base for exploring the Scottish Borders and Northumberland.

The 67 bus runs from Galashiels to Berwick upon Tweed stops in Kelso town centre. From Galashiels alight at Kelso Horsemarket and from Berwick upon Tweed alight at Kelso Woodmarket. Both stops are a level 2 minute walk to Inglestone House. Nearest train station are Berwick upon Tweed or Tweedbank. Both stations have step free access and the 67 bus stops outside and takes you directly to Kelso. Tweedbank Station is the start of the line to regular trains to Edinburgh, which is about an hour away.

For a historic house, the disabled access is excellent. There are 2 entrances to the house. The main entrance is on Abbey Row and there is about 12 steps with handrails on both sides up to the front door. I used the step free entrance on The Square. Look for the gap to the left of the Royal Bank of Scotland, where you will see a couple of buildings set back from the main square. The one on the left has a permanent ramp and this is the step free entrance to Inglestone House. The area directly in front of the house is cobblestoned. From the step free entrance level there are 2 step free bedrooms. I stayed in Room 6. It is a twin bedroom and is extremely spacious and comfortable. There are two comfortable, but firm seats with back support. There is plenty of wardrobe, drawn and shelf space. The ensuit bathroom is very spacious. It has a walk in shower with a lower shower tray, no grab rails but it does have a shower stool. The toilet has grab rails. I have a mobility disability and use a crutch and I found the shower very accessible as I leaned against the wall.

Colin and Lisa own and run the guest house. From my initial booking there was good and welcoming communication. I was invited from the start to use the step free entrance and was given directions on how to get there. I received a warm welcome when I arrived. I was there doing some family history and Lisa leant me one of her own books about Kelso, which turned out to have information about one of my relatives who owned a photography studio in Kelso in the Victorian period. (Thank you). Colin and Lisa were very very helpful. Guests have a breakfast menu which they fill in the evening before, on it they tick from a wide choice of food and select a time for breakfast to be served. I had breakfast served in my bedroom rather than the dining room, and this was very welcome.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

Inglestone House only serves breakfasts. There is a good choice and food is delicious. I can especially recommend the vegetarian haggis, which was the best I have tasted. While I was there Colin and Lisa spoke with me about access and have since updated their website, to provide more detailed information. I loved my stay at Inglestone House. It was comfortable, welcoming and accessible. Kelso is a lovely town and its is so convenient having somewhere comfortable to stay in the town centre as it made it really easy when going out for dinner or nipping back if I needed rest. I would very happily return and highly recommend staying there.
