Overview
Since it is a ruin then understandably not everything within the castle is wheelchair accessible, but it's a great castle to go around and get a grasp for the history and learn about the Loyal Gordons.
Transport & Parking
I wouldn't recommend getting here by train as the castle is outside of Huntly beside Huntly golf course so you would need a taxi. It is quite easy to arrive here by car. There are 2 disabled car parking spaces directly outside the reception.
Access
The reception has a very tight door for a wheelchair user to get in but the receptionist was extremely friendly so I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem if you were on your own. She came outside and opened a gate for me to get through in order to get on to castle grounds. There is then a path all the way from the gate around the castle, you get some great views. There is an information board talking about the Gordon family, I personally would like it higher (See photo). Like any castle, being so old it isn't really accessible inside the castle. There are narrow staircases to the top of the castle with handrails and about 60 steps to the top of the castle, it was certainly manageable but not my smartest idea to date.
Toilets
Probably the worst part of my visit. The receptionist gave us a code which we were to use for gaining access to the toilet. I didn't really agree with this as it would've been tricky to enter the code on my own. The disabled toilets are in the middle of nowhere. When you get into the toilet you will see that there isn't a red cord! Why, why, why. For example, if I fell inside the toilet am I supposed to scream in the hope someone heard me? Really didn't understand the thought process on this one. First time inside Britain seeing no red cord in a disabled loo. Speechless.
Staff
Fantastic. Felt like no question was too stupid to ask her. Seemed like she dealt with people with disabilities every day as she seemed to know every procedure. Fantastic customer service.
