Overview

This privately owned castle does what it can to be accessible but some parts are impossible to access for those in wheelchairs/mobility scooters/rollators and difficult for those who use sticks/crutches. That said, the staff are helpful and friendly, ready to go out of their way to help. One carer accompanying a disabled visitor is allowed free entrance.

Transport & Parking

The disabled parking is totally seperate from the main car park. If you alert the attendant on your arrival they allow you to drive up to the Entrance Booth where you can pay the entrance fee, then drive up the walkway to within 30 metres of the shop/cafe where they have designated blue badge parking. For those without a blue badge, they do run a small bus/cart that will take those with difficulty walking up the main driveway - you do need to ask for this service.

Access

The inner courtyard and castle are not accessible at all by motorised wheelchairs/scooters because of the damage they could cause - in the extensive (and beautiful) gardens they can be used. Manual wheelchairs can be used in the inner courtyard, which is very small but can not go in the castle. Access to the higher floors is by a challenging stone spiral staircase, although the staff will let those with difficulty descend by the main staircase which is normally out of bounds. Staff are helpful and there are chairs dotted around to take a rest. Good access to shops/cafe and model house display
