Overview

https://www.hamburger-kunsthalle.de Germany's largest art museum, with a great collection of art works by many famous artists, including Magritte, Paul Klee, Edvard Munch, Henry Moore, Jean Arp, Giocometti and a number of famous Impressionists. We started in the old building (Lichtwark Gallery) with the Altmeisterwerke, including some absolutely wonderful religious triptychs from the middle ages. There is a room devoted to Cranach - but we were very disappointed to find it closed during our visit. We spent 3 hours there, and did not see anywhere near all of it. In particular, we did not make it over to the new building, the Gallery of Contemporary art. We had some very nice afternoon tea in the cafetaria (Cafe Das Liebermann) - accessible, with plenty of space to get to a table. There is also a restaurant in the newer building, but we didn't go there.

Transport & Parking

There are several pay car parks nearby, and the Gallery is right opposite the main train station - so plenty of public transport. We came by mobility scooter (and foot) from the hotel, so cannot say how accessible the parking etc actually is

Access

Outdoor ramps up to the Kunsthalle. As the Lichtwark Gallery is an old building, there are a lot of steps inside, but there are also lifts (including wheelchair lifts) so you can get to every room - though sometimes not directly. There are price concessions for disabled visitors, and the carer goes free. All the artworks are labelled in German and English

Toilets

Only one accessible toilet in each building. The one I visited was step-free, roomy, with grab rails and sign posted from the cafe.

Staff

Did not interact with the staff much, but when we did they were friendly and helpful

A great way to spend a rainy day. I particularly loved the old paintings from the middle ages, and the Modern Art.
