Overview
Halliwell’s House Museum is a small, local history museum in Selkirk town centre. The museum is step free. It has a fascinating collection and it has free admission. I really enjoyed it as it has an eclectic collection the town as well as domestic life history, shopping, early photography. There really is something for everyone.
Transport & Parking
I travelled there by car and we parked in the high street. There are two bus services (X95 & 73) which operate in Selkirk. The nearest stop to the museum is in the Market Place next to the bookshop and Sir Walter Scott’s Courtroom. This is approximately a 5 minute walk from the museum – along Halliwell’s Close (which has cobblestone) to the Market Place. To avoid the cobblestones you can approach via West Port Car Park.
Access
The historic building is step free. At the entrance there is a manual door but it was already open when I arrived. There is a permanent rap into the foyer and some ramps into some of the rooms. The first floor rooms can be accessed by stairs with handrails on both sides or by a lift. In some of the rooms there is seating.
Toilets
There is no access to toilets for visitors in the museum but there are toilets and an accessible toilet on the road up to West Port carpark with access via a radar key available in reception.
Staff
There is a member of staff on the desk in the foyer/ shop area. She was very friendly and welcoming.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
This is a small museum crammed with lots of fascinating displays. I really enjoyed it. The Borders Live who manage the museum, have on their website a very detailed accessibility guide, which is very detailed and contains photos. This is one of the best ever museum access guides I've come across. Thank you for doing this, it provided me with a good and accurate sense of what the museum was going to be like. Very happily recommend and would be very pleased to return.
