Overview
Gullane Bents, beach, isn't somewhere I would expect to visit easily as it is predominantly sand and a hill climb down from the car park. It was amazing to discover that East Lothian Council had thought about this and created something for people with mobility impairments by installing an easy to walk path, fabulous toilets and a viewing platform with accessible picnic benches and plenty of space to sit and watch the world go by.
Transport & Parking
Arriving at the car park, a quick drive around revealed a row of accessible parking bays at the front so you had a view of the sea. Adjacent to the parking bays was an area with information boards to explain the layout of the beach. Excitingly a new board had appeared which announced a wheelchair accessible walkway and viewing platform, toilets and a Changing Places Toilet. It's hard to think of how many beaches actually have a Changing Places loo...
Access
Leaving the car we ventured along the tarmac walkway, passing through the colourful gorse bushes and trees we turned a corner to reveal a green and vibrant space. The path reached a junction and turning left took you to the toilets, straight on and you started a grassy track, and heading to the right a brand new tarmac walkway headed off into the greenery of the bushes and plants. A short distance of around 100 metres, if that, the landscaped opened up to reveal a large accessible viewing platform. Four wheelchair accessible benches were set out for those who may want to bring a picnic. One of the benches incorporated a stone slabbed section for people who may want to bring one of those barbecue trays for a bit of outdoor cooking. The area was surrounded by sturdy fencing so you didn't feel as though you would roll of the stone paving and start to head down the grassy bank and end up in a pile on the beach below. The view were fabulous and the viewing area had been designed with a section that got you nearer to the beck and the amazing views. A fabulous spot to take a picture or simply sit and admire the world passing by.
Toilets
In one word, Exemplary! Great conventional toilets, a couple of accessible loos, and a fabulous Changing Places Toilet too. This doesn't happen often as there are only 1725 Changing Places Toilets in the entire UK (at the time of writing).
