Overview
The Gulbenkian contains a fine theatre, a cinema and a concert hall, all on one level with fine bar/restaurant, but there are some aspects they could improve. Wheelchairs have to sit right in the very front of both theatre and cinema. There has been talk of making it possible to sit at the back by using an existing lift but a doorway needs to be opened up and that does not seem to be happening. In addition the venue is not generous with the discounts it offers. Disabled customers pay the same rate as pensioners but there is no discount to a carer, often a free ticket is provided, and the CEA cinema card is not acknowledged. Why is this?
Transport & Parking
There are disabled spaces on the University campus, but none directly provided for Gulbenkian users nor are any right next tot he entry doors. There used to be some but they have been built over and no new ones provided to replace them.
Access
There is an automatic entry door and wide passageways throughout the venue.
Toilets
There is a disabled loo but it is through a heavy door that is the only way to all loos so can be congested and clumsy to manoeuvre through.
Staff
Staff vary, mostly fine but there is no low serving space on the bar which is staffed by a mixture of part time staff, probably students, some are not aware of the needs of disabled.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
This is a delightful venue for the Arts on the campus of Kent University which with a little extra could be outstanding for the disabled, rear seating for the cinema could be so easy.
