Overview

The Glencoe National Nature Reserve is managed by the National Trust of Scotland. It offers a range of facilities. There is the visitor's centre which has an exhibition, cinema, cafe, shop and accessible toilet. In close vicinity of the visitors building is an outdoor viewing point and the Turf House. All this is a very accessible with step free access. We stopped at the for about 1.5 hours as part of a coach tour, so I did not have time to explore the wider estate grounds and trials.

Transport & Parking

I came here as part of a coach tour and I am unsure how accessible this would be by public transport. There is a large car park with blue badge parking bays.

Access

The main entrance is on a very slight upward slope from the car park. There are double manual doors at the entrance which brings you into the shop. The main building is entirely step free with wooden flooring. SHOP The shop counter has a lower section and there is an induction loop. CAFE There is double manual doors into the cafe, which is self serve. The counter has an induction loop and a lower section. There is a variety of seating, from free standing benches and stools with out back support or arm rests, and booths with fixed sofas with with back support but may be tricky for some people to get in and out of. While in principle there is a good choice of different seating for people, given when I arrived it was extremely busy, I struggled to find a suitable seat to accommodate my access needs. This was my only negative comment about the whole visit, but a wider choice of seating with back and arm support would be most welcome. GALLERY AND CINEMA I ran out of time to go into the visitors gallery and cinema so can't comment. MOUNTAIN VIEW POINT The mountain viewpoint is outside and only 30 metres from the building along a compacted gravel surface with narrow gradient and in places a bit uneven. In this area were some benches with back support but no arms and some picnic style benches. TURF HOUSE It is a further 100 metres from the view point to the Turf House. It has two separate, open, low doorways to get in and inside there is an uneven flagstone floor and there is only natural light from the windows and doors so it has reduced light. The path then leads you back to the building to a single manual door which comes out near the cafe. This route has a slightly more noticeable slope so you may prefer to retrace your steps, particularly if the ground is wet.

Toilets

There is one accessible toilet in the main toilet block that I used. It does not require a RADAR key. There is a manual door. While the space is quite large it was cluttered with two large bins. There were plenty of grab rails by the toilet and one on the back of the door but no grab rails by the sink. There was an emergency cord that reached towards the floor. The toilets were cleaned and well maintained.

Staff

I had very minimal contact with the staff just in the cafe. They were friendly and efficient.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

This is a brilliant accessible location with lots to do. The view and turf house are only a short step free walk from the centre building and the centre has a lovely cafe. Don't miss the turf house, even if you can only enjoy it from outside, it is an amazing construction. Would very happily return and a great stop over if your touring Scotland.
