Overview

A beautiful eco-tourism glampsite set on the private loch of Dundas Castle. A short 10 minute or so drive from the Queensferry Crossing and Forth Road Bridge. There are 10 luxury canvas cottages (tents) with one being wheelchair accessible. The accessible tent features wooden ramp, en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower and handrails as well as plenty of space to move around in a wheelchair.

Transport & Parking

There is a parking bay next to the accessible canvas cottage (tent). This provides immediate access to the tent via the wooden ramp. The parking bay area is covered in gravel which was manageable with support in my powerchair but I’d imagine some people may find it difficult.

Access

There was a wooden ramp from the parking bay up to the private patio area. The patio had table and chairs, gas BBQ, patio heater and small outdoor fridge, but there was still space to easily move around in my wheelchair. Access from the patio into the tent was level and step-free. Once inside I was shocked by how spacious it was. There was lots of space to manoeuvre around and it felt bigger than a lot of hotels I've stayed in. It also felt nice to drive across the smooth wooden floors. The king-size bed was comfortable and was nicely decorated with cushions, blanket and hot water bottles. The bed was lower than a standard bed, so it made wheelchair transfers fairly easy. Space underneath the bed could accommodate a portable hoist if needed. As there was no electricity in the tent, there were times we struggled especially in the bathroom at night. The small solar light on the roof didn't give off much light so we were almost in complete darkness. This made using the bathroom even with assistance very difficult and a little risky especially as I can't walk, have extremely poor upper body strength and rely on help with everything. I feel the low-key lighting is perhaps not so good for guests with mobility and visual impairments. There are so many pros to there being no electricity. One being you get to switch off and have no distractions from the internet world, friends etc. However, this could be a problem for disabled guests who require mobility aids/medical equipment and also need to charge them. I have a powerchair so I'd need to charge it if I was there any longer than a day. Thankfully I live very close and fully charged my chair the night before our stay.

Toilets

The en-suite bathroom was directly off from the bedroom area. Again I was very surprised by how spacious it was. I imagined it would be very small considering it is outside, but it was a nice surprise to see it had a hot water shower, sink and eco-friendly toilet. There was also towels and biodegradable toiletries. I felt the toilet was a little too high for me and I struggled to keep my balance due to the height. A pull-down grab rail was positioned next to the toilet, but I think having one on the other side would help give more support. There is a fixed grab bar but it is on the wall behind the toilet so it was out of reach.

Staff

The glampsite wardens were very helpful and explained fully how everything worked when we arrived. They were very quick to respond to requests etc.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

I would recommend that you try glamping at Dundas Castle if you are able to manage without electricity in terms of not needing to charge or use mobility/medical equipment. It obviously gets extremely dark inside the tent so bring torches! The location is lovely and it's great to sit on the patio watching the ducks and wildlife. It's very peaceful! I would like to try glamping again, but the low-key lighting and lack of electricity is sadly a bit of a deal breaker for me.
