Overview

Expected difficulties as in any medieval castle. But though they've tried to improve access they don't seem to have thought it through. Accessible toilet in car park only, 300m from castle and you have to ask to have it unlocked - why not Radar?? Gents toilets inside castle could be made safer with new steps and handrails or ramp. Lift to first floor locked, only unlocked by site manager who might be ages away and manoeuvring in and out not easy. Shop and cafe staff need more training to be able to answer accessibility questions.⁷

Transport & Parking

2.5

Disabled parking right by ticket office, 300m to castle. Possible to drop off at castle entrance but have to reverse 300m back to carpark.

Access

1.5

Used small mobility scooter from carpark. Easy tarmac path. Inside castle gravel/stone paths and grass - no problems. Castle walls not accessible, understandable. Inside Poorhouse: cafe and shop on ground floor. Platform lift to first floor but kept locked so shop staff had to radio site manager to come and unlock. Just enough room in lift for small scooter plus carer. Had to reverse out blind. Small exhibition and town museum - cramped for maneuvering but possible. Top floor only accessible by steep stairs. If another person uses the lift to go down there's no way to get the lift back up without carer going back down long metal staircase to ask staff to unlock and return lift to ist floor!!

Toilets

1.5

Accessible loo by ticket office in carpark. Clean and useable, room for carer. No Changing Places toilet. Have to ask staff in ticket office to unlock loo - NOT radar - and then you have to go back to tell them so they can lock it again! Would imagine that in peak season you could have a long wait! No accessible loo in the castle which is 300m away. Toilets in castle: ladies - up a few steps with handrail. Gents - 2 very rough and uneven stone steps, no handrail. Potentially dangerous even for able bodied.

Staff

2.5

Ticket office staff friendly and helpful. Cafe staff ok but could only answer questions about cafe, I.e. not about how to access lift. Shop staff also unsure about how to use lift.
