Overview
This is a beautiful spot - our walk/wheel started from and finished at the castle. We did and out and back outing. The first part closest to the castle is on a firm surface so good for wheelchairs. However it changes as it enters the woods into rougher ground, with some occasional steep sections. You will need sturdy off road wheels to tackle the furthest sections. I needed extra help on some of the slopes even with electric battery power (I use a Viper power trike). The star rating reflects the strenuous nature of some sections. However don't be put off - the lower sections are easier. I also met a lady walking the riverside section using a wheeled walker.
Transport & Parking
Had to park in a car park in Barnard Castle. There were blue badge spaces almost opposite the castle but we didn't notice them til later as they were so poorly marked. There were two or three spaces there. It took us about three minutes to get from the public car park to the castle on foot - it's through the town on mostly good pavements, dropped kerbs etc. . It's downhill ever so slightly.
Access
First/last section near castle was on a good surface. The first/last section from behind the castle down to riverside was quite steep - down was fine but on the return leg had to be assisted, despite having battery power. The early section by the river is Tarmac and therefore smooth. The far end is more of a woodland trail though not too bad if you've got sturdy wheels - I would only suggest attempting the upper section in a very sturdy off road machine (my Viper power cycle coped well but even that needed the oacccasional shove). Sections higher up the Beck got rougher and there were sections of deep mud (there'd been a lot of rain). Also some of the upper sections were a bit steep and uneven so I appreciated having someone with me.
Toilets
No loos until you get back to the town eg in the castle.
