Overview
Since becoming a wheelchair user the one thing I’ve really missed is being able to get properly out in the country, in the middle of nowhere and be able to access paths and walks. Therefore I was delighted to discover Flanders Moss. Fairly close to Thornhill in Stirling, Flanders Moss is a circular board walk (which is very accessible) where you are able to get right out in the country, see lots of beautiful scenery and see and hear wildlife. A very peaceful spot!
Transport & Parking
Flanders Moss has a car park with multiple disabled parking bays. The car park does have gravel however this has a net over the top so I found it fairly easy to self propel my wheelchair across this. There is no close public transport to Flanders Moss. The nearest bus stop is about 1.5 miles away in Thornhill.
Access
The board walk round Flanders Moss is very (and surprisingly) accessible. I was able to complete the circular walk without any issues. There are some slight gentle slopes, however it is mostly flat and the surface is easy to self propel across. Around the walk there are benches and information boards which are at a good height. The only part that is not accessible is a viewing tower which had four flights of steps to the top, however I did not feel I missed much from not being able to access this as you can see quite a distance from the ground.
Toilets
No toilets accessible or otherwise on site. There are toilets in Thornhill (including an accessible one) about 1.5 miles away. There are directions at Flanders Moss on how to get to the toilets.
Staff
N/A No staff on site. There are information boards around the circular walk giving information on what to look for and the history of the area. These where a good height to read from a wheelchair and the print was fairly large.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
Flanders Moss is really worth a visit. I was surprised just how accessible it was while still giving the feel of being rural and in the middle of nowehere. I will be back when I am next in the area!
