Overview
A wheelchair accessible zoo with a wide range of rescued animals, handling sessions, play park and cafe. I visit every year with my nephew around the time of his birthday as it has become a family tradition for his birthday. It's a great zoo and we all enjoy our visits.
Transport & Parking
There are disabled bays at the front of the entrance, although there are many of them, I've never struggled to get one. That may not be the case in the high season, but I've never visited then. There is also an overflow car park.
Access
The entrance has level access and once inside the zoo it is mainly on the flat. There are some slopes and ramps especially down to the reptile house and there are slopes down to the bear den, which is quite steep. It was manageable in my powerchair, but some people may struggle a little with this. There is a small cafe located next to the car park, which is a little tight inside but doable. The staff were lovely and very accommodating. The zoo is currently building a larger restaurant/cafe/play area which I think will be much more accessible. It is due to open in Winter 2017 so I'm looking forward to going there the next time I visit.
Toilets
There is an accessible toilet inside the zoo once you have paid. The toilet looks like a shed from the outside, but it's actually pretty spacious and clean inside. There aren't any grab rails around the toilet, which may be a problem for some people. The sink has a pedestal, which may prevent some wheelchair users from getting close enough. There is also a baby changing table in this toilet.
Staff
The staff are all friendly and helpful, particularly the cafe staff as they were extremely accommodating and made us feel really comfortable.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
I'd recommend people to visit this zoo. It has a wide variety of animals and isn't too expensive. I like that the animals are rescued from circuses etc. There is always something new every time we visit so it's always fun and exciting for my nephew.
