Overview

If you're of the belief that nuclear weapons have no place in the modern world you could do worse than to pop into the peace camp at Faslane naval base, outside Helensburgh. There are always friendly welcoming folk ready to offer you their hospitality. With a nice wide colourful gate beside the 'visitors welcome' sign, a slabbed path twists a little bumpily through a tangle of trees and caravans into the heart of the peace camp where they are building a new, larger communal building and along to where they are converting a caravan to be wheelchair accessible, should a wheelchair-using peace activist wish to stay for a bit.

Transport & Parking

2.5

There is a bit where you can pull in to park just outside the gate although you probably cant leave your vehicle there for long as it blocks another gate to what appears to be a vacant plot.

Access

3

Who would of thought you'd find wheelchair access in a little patch of woods where 'hippies' live in brightly painted caravans? Well, being activists for peace, love and equality they wish to welcome absolutely everyone into their community. While a patchy piece of camping ground is never going to offer perfectly smooth access, the campers have done their best in laying a path of horizontal slabs through the entire area. Wheelchair users and those with ambulant mobility impairments might find they need to take their time picking their way over the bumps and lumps in the path but it is accessible to a degree. In the heart of the peace camp, activists are converting a caravan to be wheelchair accessible, should anyone with a mobility impairment wish to stay for a while. They've identified a few other areas for improvement and are working towards better access for all. If that's your thing you will manage to a degree if you can transfer easily. Don't expect luxury. But you will get a warm welcome.

Toilets

1.5

I didn't go into the toilet but I did see it. The door seemed wide enough for most chairs. No grab rails or anything but possibly just enough space to transfer from a chair. There is a bath, but nothing to assist use. Non weight bearers might struggle to use the facilities.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

As the camp is ever evolving I don't know how long this review will remain valid, but I will try to update with improvements if I ever visit again. If there is any chance of it getting dark when you visit please bring a head torch or some hand torches as it will be difficult to negotiate the path.
