Overview
Edinburgh bus station is the central bus station in the capital, and buses travel from there across Edinburgh and nearby cities and towns. I visited Edinburgh bus station twice, on an outward and return journey. On both occasions I had a very positive experience and found it very accessible. Please note I used the station when I went on a Rabbie's Tours, so I was not using the regular buses. Please note that I used the Elder Street entrance on both occasions.
Transport & Parking
The bus station is a short distance from Waverley Train Station and the nearest tram stop is St Andrew's Square. I arrived from Elder Street which has a slope downwards to the bus station from the St James shopping centre. See photos.
Access
The entire bus station is on the one level and has step free access throughout. The Elder Street entrance had double automatic doors. Immediately inside there is a screen which has bus information. There is a short corridor into the main bus station. There is a wide corridor down one side of the bus station and on the other each bus bay has its own seating area. In the middle of the station is the ticket office and toilets.
Toilets
The accessible toilet had a manual door opening directly into the main corridor, so there is only one door to navigate. The toilet was clean, tidy and well-maintained. There were plenty of grab rails and an emergency cord which hung towards the floor. Although the cubicle was large, it was cluttered with two bins plus a bucket under the sink, which might make it difficult to mauver.
Staff
I did not have any interaction with the staff from the bus station and did not see anyone around. I was going with Rabbie's Tours and their staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful, but they are not regular bus station so I will not rate this section of the review.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
This was a very positive experience. I was there at about 8.30 - 9am on a Tuesday morning and the bus station was relatively quiet apart from the area where the Rabbie's tours were leaving. The station was extremely clean with large glass windows, which made it feel safe and inviting. I would very happily travel from here again and can highly recommend it.
