Overview
The East Princes Street Gardens holds a little known secret for wheelchair users. Instead of descending from Princes Street and taking the long double ended ramp down toward the Galleries there is another more interesting route.
Transport & Parking
The Waverley Bridge entrance is directly opposite Waverley Station and the taxi rank
Access
If you are a wheelchair user, like myself, and you want to try something a little different. Head for Waverley Bridge and just opposite the Lothian Buses Travel Shop you will find the Waverley Bridge entrance to the gardens. Take the upper path, not the one that quickly descends into the lower garden, it's on your left as you go in the gate. Follow this as it gently meanders its way on a fairly level route all the way around the gardens and on to the terraced frontage of the National Galleries. You get some lovely views that you might not expect and that are often completely missed by the many tourists. I have added some photos here. Once at the galleries you can go inside and use their lifts to get back up to the Mound or you can stay in the gardens and use the ramped path to get back up to Princes Street.
