Venue Description

Durham Cathedral has been a place of welcome, worship and hospitality for almost a millennium, inspiring all who come. It is cherished for its magnificent Romanesque architecture and spectacular location at the heart of the Durham World Heritage Site. Despite being nearly 1,000 years old, the majority of Durham Cathedral is accessible to all visitors including Open Treasure, a new world-class exhibition route opening in spring 2016.

Accessibility

Access to the Cathedral is mostly via ramps. Access to the Cathedral Shop, Undercroft Restaurant and Toilets is by steps and a lift. There is a level route as well, that requires leaving the Cloister and following a route outside the main building. Within the Cathedral Church, the Chapel of Nine Altars, the Gregory Chapel and the Shrine of St Cuthbert have no ramps. We do have a stairclimber which can enable manual wheelchair users to visit these areas under the guidance of a Cathedral employee. Please contact us in advance if you wish to use the Stairclimber.
