Overview

The Castle, or perhaps more accurately it's ruins, sit on a mound in the open farmland north of Elgin. The overall rating would have been higher if the 'kissing gate' did not prevent wheelchair access. I could sit and admire the views whilst my visually impaired friend was able to pass through the gate and go exploring. That said, it was a great place to sit and admire the view of the castle, the surrounding countryside and the peace and tranquillity.

Transport & Parking

The Castle sits amidst the rural farmland north of Elgin. The only practical means of getting here is realistically using your own transport. A small car park sits at the foot of the Castle mound and is well surfaced. There are no designated accessible parking bays but it is not that busy so these aren't really necessary.

Access

It would be a higher star rating for Duffus Castle if they access gate were to be adjusted for wheelchair access. I was unable to proceed beyond the gate. That said I could see that it would be possible to have a nice walk around the lower slopes of the Castle mound and would probably be possible to approach further up to the Castle precincts. My friend was able to go further and explore and reported back on how the Castle was spread across a large area and there were places where it would be possible to get closer as a wheelchair user.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

With adjustments to access for wheelchair users this site has much to offer. The Castle is also well suited for family visits as children can roam around the ruins and enjoy the space. It's also quiet and peaceful and lends it self to visits for folk who might like a quieter and more relaxed environment.
