Overview

The sea wall walk between Dawlish and Coryton Cove is a step free, padestrianised path just above the beach. There are wonderful, amazing views as on one side you have the sea and the other the busy Great Western railway line with trains regularly passing by. This route is quite short and leads to a sandy cove, café and accessible toilet. Please be aware this route is not suitable for anyone when the weather is extreme. Transport & Parking

Dawlish Railway Station runs parallel to the sea wall walk and next to the station there is a step free access to the sea wall. The station has step free access to platform 2, with trains heading towards Exeter/ London. Platform 1 with trains towards Paignton/ Torquay is accessible via a railway bridge with stairs only. However through Special Assistance they can arrange and accompany you to cross the railway line. I found the special assistance excellent at Dawlish Station. There are also local, step free buses that stop nearby. At the end of the walk there is Dawlish Warren Station, which has step free access but the station is unstaffed. There are also step free buses from Dawlish Warren.

Access

Next to Dawlish Station there is step free access to the sea wall under railway bridge. On the wall there is a red notice saying that the sea wall surface is unsuitable for mobility scooters. Turn right onto the sea wall. There is a short, gentle upward slope and a level walk, which is paved. The path is comfortably wide enough for 2 people. On the sea side there are no railings. On the other side there is a metal fence separating the path from the railway. The path gently curves round. There is a little cove with some small boats. On the right hand side there was a low level building with an accessible toilet and a couple of benches. Continuing on the path there is a short, gentle upward slope. This leads to a terrace with beach huts. On the left hand side is a slope and on the right are steps which are marked out on the ground. Follow the path to the end of this terraced area and there is the Cove Cafe. There is an information board about Coryton Cove, the Red Rocks and the railway tunnels. To the right of the sign is a cobblestoned slope leading to the beach. I retraced my steps at this point.

Toilets

There are accessible, public toilets both at Dawlish and Coryton Cove. I used the ones at Dawlish and they were very clean, spacious, with grab rails. I didn't use the toilets at Coryton Cove.

This is a short, easy, step free, accessible coastal path with wonderful views. I will definately walk this part of the sea wall again when I next visit and will try to time it to coincide with the opening of the Cove Cafe.
