Overview

It was great to find that the Cutty Sark was wheelchair accessible and even better to see how well this had been achieved. You don't imagine a boat of such years could be accessible. The staff can only be described as fantastic for the welcome, help and information provided during my visit.

Transport & Parking

There is on street parking in the area for Blue Badge holders. There's also a DLR station that is accessible. Low floor buses also serve the area.

Access

5

As a power chair user I wasn't too sure how I was going to get around the vessel. It turned out to be incredibly accessible with lifts to all levels and these were all spacious and easy to use. Staff were on hand to help with doors if required. The tour routes were wide enough to get along and there were no challenging surfaces or manoeuvres. I could see the majority of the exhibits and think I saw everything. The visit takes you on a route to the decks and then up on to the main deck which offers a fantastic views. Below the vessel you have a fantastic gallery, cafe and a view of the hull.

Toilets

5

There are accessible toilets and I visited the one situated adjacent to the cafe and gallery space under the vessel. It was modern, it even had an automated door, was spotlessly clean and had grab rails and all that you might expect.

Staff

The staff were really helpful. Not being sure if I would fit through the narrow spaces a staff member took me to the narrowest point and to see the style of lift so I could decide if the visit would work for me as a powerchair user. All of this before buying my ticket. Other staff helped with the lift doors when I need a hand. The cafe staff were happy to take things to a table. The gift shop staff were happy to help as required. The efforts of the staff made the experience one to remember and I will recommend friends to visit the Cutty Sark if they're in the area.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

The experience was really good and the vessel has lots to see and experience. From the collection of figureheads in the gallery, through to the well laid out shop, and the welcome cafe it's a great place to visit. An example of how well accessibility can be integrated seamlessly into the visitor experience.
