Overview

We visited Cromford Mills with my husband who uses a mobility scooter. It is a grade 1 listed former spinning mill built by Richard Arkwright so is constrained by that. We went on a guided tour. It is free to walk around the site - you only pay for a tour. There are various buildings around a courtyard area. There is disabled parking close to the mill. It is on a compacted gravel surface so quite uneven but maneuverable on a scooter. The courtyard is similar and a bit uneven. It might be harder to navigate in a manual wheelchair. All the buildings have either level access or have a ramp. The visitor centre & shop has a ramp and was fully accessible. The tour then took us to the oldest of the mill buildings which has a gentle ramp inside and is all level. There, we had a talk and watched a film. We then toured round various other parts around the courtyard. The tour guide was helpful & considerate of the fact my husband was in the scooter. The cafe on site also has a ramped entrance and was easily able to accommodate my husband's scooter. The food was great and had gluten-free options for me. There is a disabled toilet which was also large enough to accommodate the scooter. After the tour you can use an audio guide to tour the village and the wharf & canal path. We walked over to the canal ( very close to the mills on the other side of the road) and could have walked along the towpath and it appeared level with a decent surface, however, it was pouring with rain, so we didn't go far! There is also a hard surface car park (pay & display) by the canal, which you could drive over to if you wished.
