Rural coffee shop set in grand surroundings

Visit date:

This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Walking Aid, Wheelchair, Powerchair

Overview

Pre arranged visit to this coffee shop with former colleagues , in grounds of a former estate. Difficult to find, but staff friendly and food tasty.

Transport & Parking

4

Very rural location, would need a car to visit, even then quite difficult to find. The main car park is a distance from the coffee shop, but there is a disabled drop of point at the door. Signage to locate coffee shop is poor, and SAT nav takes you further up the road to a farm

Access

3.5

Ground outside coffee shop is deep gravel , but there is paving beside the disabled drop off point to allow access to both levels of the cafe. The toilets are located on the Lower level of the cafe , so would advise wheelchair users to book ahead, to ensure a table on the lower level. The paving extends from the main gates to the property, the gravel would be difficult for anybody with mobility problems to negotiate. Seating outside for a rest. Signage inside poor, I had to get a friend to look for the accessible loo. Cafe split on 2 levels , with stairs between the levels, no lift or ramp. Tables were quite close together, friends had to move furniture to allow me to move

Toilets

4

Lacking signage, but clean , tidy, and plenty of space. Lots of tables and chairs to negotiate to access the main access to toilets

Staff

5

Staff were exceptional, came out in the pouring rain to advise about the paving and wheelchair access at the lower level, could not have done more

Anything else you wish to tell us?

Felt tables were a bit close together, and a bit anxious as mask wearing restrictions had been lifted in England

Several things on this review are actually incorrect. So as the business owner, I will respond to these individually. Transport & Parking "Very rural location, would need a car to visit, even then quite difficult to find. The main car park is a distance from the coffee shop, but there is a disabled drop of point at the door. Signage to locate coffee shop is poor, and SAT nav takes you further up the road to a farm". From Carlisle the coffee shop has 8 signs on both the A595 and A596. Once you see the fishing lake on the right, a brown sign points you to the coffee shop. Once down the drive, you will see a 20ft board and a 4ft board both directing you to the carpark. Nobody should be going right up to the farm track so I suggest customers look out for the signs which are clearly visible. Once you turn left for the car park a further 6 signs guide you into the car park area. The car park is 60 yards from the coffee shop with a path. We have one disabled parking space in the courtyard for drivers in wheelchairs as a special pathed area has been made for them to put wheelchairs on. ACCESS "Ground outside coffee shop is deep gravel , but there is paving beside the disabled drop off point to allow access to both levels of the cafe. Tables were quite close together, friends had to move furniture to allow me to move." The ground outside the coffee shop is deep gravel as stated but this is not for disabled use only as a drop off on the hard standing. We have disabled toilets on both upper and lower level so people can choose which level they would like to be on, therefore not needing a ramp on the 4 steps between the two levels. The room is open with only toilets on each level which are clearly signed with male/female/disabled on the doors. With regards to tables too close to each other. This was due to this ladies party having more arrive than booked. So 10 people were on a table for 8 people, causing less space than normal, hence why furniture had to be moved on this occasion. There is more room at the top level and we normally suggest wheelchairs users choose this area. TOILETS "Lacking signage, but clean , tidy, and plenty of space. Lots of tables and chairs to negotiate to access the main access to toilets". The coffee shop is a very large, open space with only two rooms throughout. These are the toilets which are clearly signed on each door. It isn't hard to see them from either level and customers can always ask if they are unsure. We have made our business very disabled friendly and also have an ambulatory chair inside for anybody to use when required if they want to use stairs rather than the two disabled entrances. Path's have been made wider to accommodate wheelchairs. No customers should be parking in gravelled courtyard as this is the parking for the other businesses in the courtyard. Our car park is large, closely situated to the coffee shop with disabled driver parking in the courtyard. We hope this addresses some of the inaccuracies above.
