Overview

This beautiful and interesting museum was the highlight of my 9-year-old son's trip to Barcelona, and thanks to the good wheelchair/scooter access, I was able to enjoy everything with him.

Transport & Parking

3.5

I think this has potential to be very good, but not the way we did it. We took one of Barcelona's fine wheelchair-accessible buses to what looked like a stop close to the museum. It turned out, though, that there was a steep climb up through some residential streets to actually reach the place, which would not have been possible without the powerful 10kph scooter I had rented - certainly too steep for manual wheelchairs. However, we discovered later that we had approached the museum through the back entrance, and at the front, there is a level road outside where a taxi could drop you off - and there's probably a bus route that goes up there too. It's worth investigating this before you go.

Access

There were good lifts and ramps, and I was able to visit all the parts of the museum that I and my family wanted to see, including the aquarium and the Amazonian flooded forest. I was also able to reach the "hands on" science experiment exhibits from my scooter.

Toilets

3.5

I used the one near the museum cafe and it was OK. I'm never that thrilled to have to share with a baby changing facility, but it was easy to find, reasonably clean and big enough to fit my scooter inside. One of the rails was a bit loose, though - could provide a hairy moment for a future user.

They knew their stuff about wheelchair user + assistant tickets, and were on hand and quick to help with things like opening the wheelchair gates by the turnstiles.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

This is a very impressive science museum with a surprisingly decent cafe, and it's a good choice on a rainy day or if you're visiting Barcelona with children. I have to say, though, that the museum's official website is hard to find from an internet search: I found it eventually by clicking through from the Caixa Foundation site. Here's the museum's own site: https://obrasociallacaixa.org/en/ciencia/cosmocaixa/el-museo but I found this one more useful: https://www.barcelona-museum.com/cosmocaixa.html
