Overview

Loix is one of the village on the island of Ile de Re. In the town centre is a church and a couple of restaurants. On the outskirts of the town are the salt fields.

Transport & Parking

4

To travel to Loix requires 2 buses. The main no 3 bus doesn't go to Loix so you have to change from a coach style bus to a smaller bus which takes you to the outskirts of the village. Both buses are wheelchair accessible. From the bus stop it is a 5 minute walk to the village square.

Access

4

Loix village centre is flat and there is not too much traffic on the road. There is a central square with shady trees and benches. On the square is Eglise Sainte Catherine, the parish church, which has 1 step at the entrance. Next to the church is a café, La Route du Sel, with indoor and outdoor seating. I think there may have been a step from the courtyard to the indoor part of the restaurant. The tourist information has a step at it's entrance. On the outskirts was he salt fields and a salt museum. The bus drove passed the museum but did not stop and it was too long a distance to walk, with a crutch, especially as the route was along a cycle path and not where to stop and rest en route.

Toilets

1

La Route du Sel had a toilet but it there was a step to get to it and there were no grab rails in the toilet. I'm unable to comment about other toilets in the village.

Staff

2

The staff at the tourist information centre were welcoming, but were less fluent in English compared to the other tourist information centres I visited during my stay. It wasn't a problem but there wasn't any assistance offered.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

Eglise Sainte Catherine and the cemetery next to it (step and heavy door to get in) and the square were very picturesque. The church is charming although simply decorated. he restaurants in the area open for lunch and dinner so I think mid afternoon the village would be quite quiet. The salt museum would require a vehicle to get to it.
