Overview
I had the pleasure of visiting the Euan's Guide office at Codebase. While finding the location was initially very tricky due to Google Maps shenanigans, once I arrived, it was straightforward to access. The staff at Codebase were incredibly welcoming; I haven't yet mastered the art of opening glass doors, so it was great that the front desk team offered to hold them open. Inside, the office spaces are open-plan, with automatic double doors and hallways that easily accommodate 2 powerchairs wheeling side-by-side (photo below). The kitchen area is open-plan, though it's worth noting that the counters may be too high for independent use by some wheelchair users. All spaces on the first floor are step-free, with a lift available if you need to access higher floors.
Transport & Parking
I take the bus to Codebase, which is straightforward. There are plenty of bus routes that you can take to its location, so it's easy to access by public transport. The area can get congested, but bus drivers were attentive and quick to assist with the ramp for wheelchair users, making the journey smooth overall. 3.5 stars as I'm not a driver so cannot say anything in regards to parking.
Access
Codebase has good but not perfect accessibility features. The building includes lifts and many step-free meeting rooms, which are open plan, making them easy to navigate. Certain things like exit buttons and key fobs are placed quite high, which can be inconvenient for wheelchair users. A few glass doors are placed about the building, which can be tricky to handle independently, though everyone's always happy to help.
Toilets
The accessible toilets were clean and well-maintained, with automatic doors to enter the hallway leading to them. Grab rails were available, though I didn’t use them, so I can’t confirm their condition. A red cord was hung free in the corner of the bathroom. There was ample space for a carer if needed, but it’s worth noting that there is no Changing Places toilet. The only drawback was that the toilet roll holder was installed higher than convenient; however, as I can transfer from my chair, it wasn’t too challenging for me to manage.
Staff
The staff at Codebase were lovely and welcoming. Any limitations in accessibility, such as the glass door at the entrance, are offset. They’re also very open to feedback, which made my visit all the more positive.
