Overview
Doors and barrier access I've attended this college for many years the staff are great but Access wise there's much to be desired, the disabled access door on street level often breaks and is left for weeks with no one fixing it meaning I rely on one of the security guards to open or another student to move the spinning doors for me, the barriers to the main student areas don't give someone with slower movement to get through on time and one has now been broken for many weeks and that one is the wheel chair accessible one, I also wish these larger barriers were labeled for disabled access so people wouldn't use them as much because you often get stuck waiting to go through these ones even though it's clearly your only option to use that one. Toilets There is also only 1 disabled toilet per floor as you get past the 7th floor and the sanitary products are only in them rather than all toilets which means folk who need a sanitary product often use this toilet leaving me stuck waiting for someone to leave the toilet. I've also had to complain many times about the red cord being tied up. They also have stable doors which are quite heavy and difficult to lock. First aid and support staff It can also take a long time to get a first aider to respond I've waited a half hour for someone and as someone who has seizures and is once on the floor gets stuck needing help up this is too long to wait. It also doesn't help that senior staff are trying to reduce the amount of support staff which there already isn't enough of. Also many of the first aiders can be very rude when you say you've had a seizure, you get met with this sort of attitude of "well if you have seizures why do you come to college". Quite spaces There really isn't enough in quiet spaces, the lights are very uncomfortable after a full day people go to pray in the quiet room so you feel uncomfortable using it to relax, a staff member will use the first aid room at lunchtime as her medication makes her sleepy which means if I need to take my painkillers I often don't have a place to go to where I can lie down as these are strong painkillers. There was talk of a sensory room a few years ago but this plan seems to have dried up. Classrooms The classrooms are a real mix bagged of accessibility workshops on the upper floors are awful the hard cement floor is easy to injury yourself if you trip and really dangerous if you have drop seizures. My lecturers have had to go out their way to make it all more accessible for me and others which really seems unfair to them why is it not thought of long ago. Health and safety There has only been 1 fire drill this year so far, I have very little confidence in evacuating the building as this fire alarm didn't have me practice how to leave the building just wait on the 8th floor let someone know my location and then getting told to go back to class, I would much prefer they did a full evacuation where they used every possibility in my PEEP to get me out the building including the fire lift and the stair evac. As I am on the top floors I do get very nervous about in the event of a fire. Resting places I really wish there was more spaces outside lifts for me to sit whilst waiting on the lifts, especially for the disabled lift as they are very slow moving, I'm very lucky as many of the security guards see me coming in on the morning and call the lift so it starts making its way down before that. Any seating there is dotted about does not have a plug near by so I often need to get up to charge my things and leave them to sit back down again, many plug points are on the ground as soon as these traps are open they are a very easy trip hazard Lifts As stated there isn't many places to rest but the lifts also get overcrowded, I wish they would reinforce how their is disabled people who need priority access to the lifts. Now even if I wasn't disabled I am still on the 10th floor so take the lift anyway but I often get stuck waiting because people who may or may not be disabled use the lift to go up 1 floor. Staff The staff are generally pretty great, I will not name certain people but some of the greatest staff are security guards who are also first aiders they are willing to give me a hand and have often looked out for me when I'm having a preticularly bad day. Learning support staff are also great. Some staff could do with some Training in working with nureodivergent folk as they really don't seem to get the world around them when it comes to aiding students All in all the college has a lovely atmosphere but a lot to work on in terms of disabled access, it's a really great college to go to especially for creative industries as the staff are just really lovely
Transport & Parking
