Overview

Rome's Ciampino Airport is small, and can get very crowded at times. Overall, access is very good, but you can expect queues and a hectic service system in the airport's food outlets. They have made an effort to provide good disabled access, and the airport is level throughout.

Transport & Parking

We took a taxi to and from the airport, but there are shuttle busses that will take you to the city centre for around four euros. Everything is very clearly signposted to show you where to queue for different modes of transport. There can be a significant wait for the shuttle busses if several planes have arrived within the same hour.

Access

There is a ramp leading into the airport where you are met with Braille directions and automatic doors. Immediately inside the arrivals area, there are toilets including a large accessible loo - but be aware you might need to move through a bit of a crowd to reach them. At the departures lounge, disabled access was much more obvious. There was an electronic accessibility information podium to give you directions, disabled access information and useful tips. I spotted it immediately. The airport was entirely level access throughout, and everything was clearly signposted. The food outlets are very hectic however - so be prepared for scattered queues and bustling about at tills and collection points.

Toilets

Toilets that I saw were spacious and clean - however one that I used was down a fairly narrow corridor which can be filled with people queuing in what seemed to feel like an airport at over capacity!

Staff

Airport staff were friendly and helpful, but staff in the shops and food outlets were less patient.

It's a functional airport which would be perfectly accessible if it could handle the volume of passengers passing through it a little more easily. I'm sure that at peak holiday times this airport will be a lot quieter.
