Overview
This castle's website states that due to its age and uneven floors it will be difficult for disabled people .Frankly, it is a DISGRACE. There is a rope rail on the spiral stairs to the Tea Room. The loos are also here and no sign of an accessible loo anywhere. The rooms are dark and dirty ,the museum is littered with old pieces of threadbare carpet, a real trip hazard. No markings on exterior steps. One feels that the intention is to cock a snook at accessibility legislation. It needs an urgent visit from Health and Safety , all the piles of junk sorted and thrown out. A job for either National Trust or English Heritage.
Transport & Parking
We parked outside the front door, having telephoned beforehand. It is in a remote rural area.
Access
The website makes it clear that the current owner apparently takes a pride in the castle remaining as inaccessible as possible. There is no accessible loo, no safe hand rails on spiral stairs, threadbare pieces of carpet all over the museum floor, poor lighting in the museum and torture chamber ,very few room attendants, no markings on exterior steps. it is a nightmare and I don't understand how the owners get away with opening such a squalid, unsafe property to the public.
Toilets
if there is one, we didn't find it or any sign indicating there is one. The whole place displayed contempt for disabled visitors.
Staff
Friendly tea room staff, otherwise, barely existent.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
We won't visit again and I feel it needs an urgent visit from Health and Safety, a thorough clean, safe handrails added and trip hazard carpets removed as a matter of urgency .It is privately owned but it would be far better under the supervision of National Trust or English Heritage.
