Overview

We visited Chester's Fort because it is an English Heritage site and we are members. With hindsight, some of the other Hadrian's Wall attractions are probably better for wheelchair access. We had a lovely visit but I was very limited in what I could access.

Transport & Parking

5

We arrived by motorhome and parked easily in the coach parking area. There was plenty of parking available, including blue badge spaces. Parking is free for members but you have to display your membership sticker in the window.

Access

The positives were level entry into the entrance, shop and museum. Most of the site is grass and it is hilly in places, which was fine in my mountain trike, though tiring but might have been very difficult in some chairs. All of the ruins are in fenced areas and down steps... mostly long flights of steps. These were completely inaccessible for me. I could take photos from outside but that was about it.

Toilets

4

There is one accessible toilet in the shop. It is right in the corner and some Roman shields had to be moved to let me in. The doorway was too narrow for my trike but was fine for my normal chair. It was clean. It had a RADAR lock but mostly was left open and staff used it (e.g. cafe staff).

Staff

4.5

The staff were generally friendly and helpful. When explaining the layout of the site, one lady told us that we would have to take turns doing the museum because dogs aren't allowed in. I questioned this as she is an assitance dog and she had to go and check with her boss. I think all staff should be trained and know this basic rule.

Photos

Ruins of a Roman room with fencing and steps in the background. Roman ruins of several rooms with grass inside and out. Ruins in the foreground with grass bank showing that the fence is raised above the ruins. Looking down into the valley and the river, the bath house ruins are at the top of the hill. Grass path around the grounds with black fencing on the left.
