Overview
Overview: Our visit to Chester Zoo offered valuable insights into its accessibility, highlighting both strengths and areas for improvement. While there are some challenges, the staff's helpfulness, and commitment to aiding make a significant positive difference in the overall experience.
Transport & Parking
Lots of parking available in the car park, with disabled parking available opposite the zoo entrance. The car park can become hectic during busier times. There is a bus route to the zoo and Bache railway station is 5 minutes drive from the zoo.
Access
Entrance and General Access: The front entrance is fully level-access, ensuring that everyone can start their visit without barriers. The staff at Chester Zoo are incredibly kind and more than happy to help with any assistance needed, from providing directions to aiding with mobility equipment. Ticketing and Carer Access: Chester Zoo offers complimentary entry for carers accompanying visitors with disabilities. To avail of this, you need to present an Access Card or proof of disability at the entrance. This policy helps ensure that those who require assistance can have the support they need without additional financial burden. Mobility Options: Chester Zoo offers mobility scooters, but these must be pre-booked. Same-day reservations are not available, so planning is crucial. The staff is always willing to assist with any mobility needs, ensuring that visitors feel supported throughout their visit. Pathways and Routes: The route to the island features a bumpy path, which can be challenging for mobility users. It is best to avoid this path if you have mobility concerns. The aquarium area is dimly lit, with a subtle step that could pose a tripping hazard. While there is a yellow light indicating the step, it may not be noticeable enough. The area can also get busy, so be aware of potential sensory overload in these enclosed spaces. Additionally, some bridge walkways in the park have rumble stripes, which can make navigation difficult for those with accessibility needs, particularly those using wheelchairs or walkers. This design feature, while intended for safety, may pose an additional challenge for some visitors. Boat Ride: Chester Zoo offers a free boat ride that is partially accessible for wheelchair users. There are wheelchair-adaptable boats available, each with one space for a manual wheelchair. However, electric wheelchairs are not permitted on the boats. Additionally, passengers must be able to walk unaided, as babies and children may not be carried on the ride. Children under 1.2 meters tall must be accompanied by an adult at a ratio of 1 adult to 2 children. These restrictions are important to consider when planning to include this activity in your visit. Off-Road Adventure: Designed for children, this activity lacks accessible buggies, making it unsuitable for kids with mobility needs. It is advisable to check the website or call ahead for specific accessibility details. The staff is more than willing to provide additional information and help where possible.
Toilets
Toilet Facilities: The zoo has several accessible toilets, but it is important to note that there is only one adult changing space available in the entire park. This is located halfway around the park near the virtual reality experience. While the adult changing facility is well-equipped, it is disappointing that in a park as large as Chester Zoo, more of these facilities are not available. This can be a significant inconvenience for those who require such facilities, and expanding this provision would enhance the overall accessibility of the zoo.
Staff
All staff were very welcoming and friendly.

Crowds and Sensory Considerations: Certain areas of Chester Zoo, especially enclosed spaces like the aquarium, can become crowded, leading to potential sensory overload. For visitors sensitive to noise or crowds, it is best to visit these parts of the zoo during quieter times to enjoy a more comfortable experience Conclusion: Chester Zoo is making commendable efforts in accessibility, with friendly and helpful staff enhancing the visitor experience. The availability of free entry for carers with proof of disability is a significant plus, ensuring that those in need of assistance can enjoy their visit without extra costs. The partially accessible boat ride is a nice feature, though it comes with specific restrictions, such as the exclusion of electric wheelchairs and the requirement for passengers to walk unaided. However, the limited number of adult changing facilities, coupled with the challenges posed by rumble stripes on bridge walkways and other physical barriers, are notable shortfalls. Expanding these facilities and addressing other areas of improvement, particularly in physical access and sensory accommodations, will help ensure that all visitors, regardless of their mobility or sensory needs, can fully enjoy their day. Call to Action: Accessibility is essential, and Chester Zoo is on the right path. Let us continue advocating for improvements that make experiences like these accessible to everyone. Visit during quieter times, and do not hesitate to ask the staff for any assistance—they are always happy to help. #AccessibilityMatters #ChesterZoo
