Overview
Play park with wheelchair accessible areas to provide inclusion for everyone. Also has changing place toilet for those who need the use of a hoist. Great fun and would definitely go back when I want to just act like a big kid for an hour or so.
Transport & Parking
No designated disabled spaces that I could see. I did park further away from the play park area though as I took my dog on a long walk however, there is a car park right next to the play area and there might be disabled spaces there. There is a bus stop just outside the park, but I would recommend going by car as you would have to walk up a road to get to the park and it's quite a distance.
Access
Some pathways have gravel stones however, there are other ways that are more accessible to get to areas of the park. As I said I took my dog for a walk and the grass was a little uneven but I managed. With parks it's never going to be really smooth for wheelchairs because it's nature, but there is always ways to get somewhere. The main thing I like about Camperdown is that there play park includes parts that wheelchairs can get on which means everyone is included in the fun. There is a roundabout which a wheelchair can fit on (see image attached) which means that children (and adults) can play with their friends. I tried it and it was fun, but I'm not used to my wheelchair moving without me being in control so it felt weird. There's also a ramped area at another section of the play park with means wheelchairs can get access. There's not much on this area but if someone wanted to use the slide but couldn't walk or be carried very far then their wheelchair can get right up to the steps. That's all really that wheelchair user can get on but it's better than nothing. The ground is mainly tarmac around this area so wheelchairs can't get stuck in sand or bark. There is another play area that is mainly sand but at least one area isn't. There is also plenty of areas for people to sit and have a rest if needed.
Toilets
This is something I was really happy about. It's the first public place I have seen in Dundee to have a changing place toilet, it is very spacious for a wheelchair and 2 helpers if needed. There is a tracking hoist going from bed to toilet and also a privacy curtain. The sign says that you can pick a radar key up from the kiosk or wildlife cafe, however the kiosk isn't always open so I had to go to the wildlife centre with is a little bit far to go. The kiosk is only open when it's really sunny and busier. Probably more in the school holidays. The only thing that made me take off half a star is because the bed is quite hard to lie on and with me having a curved spine I have to lie on something softer.
Staff
Didn't really interact with many staff members, although the lady that gave us the radar key for the changing place toilet was nice.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
The only thing I would say would be to maybe have an accessible swing for people to use as well.
