Overview

Family run, self service café with indoor and outdoor seating in the middle of Russell Square Gardens, a Bloomsbury Square, close to the British Museum. The café serves a wide variety of home made food and drinks, I'll write more about this in the anything else section at the end of the review. The café is step free with an accessible toilet.

Transport & Parking

The nearest tube Russell Square is not accessible as it has lift and stairs. The nearest accessible tube is King's Cross. King's Cross and Euston train stations are nearby and from there you can then change onto a bus. There are a number of buses that stop very close by. At time of writing June 2018, the bus numbers are 10, 59, 68, 91, 98, 168 and 188. I'm sorry I can't comment on parking.

Access

The café is located inside Russell Square Gardens. The entrances to the gardens are step free through wide wrought iron gates, which are left wide open when the park is open. Inside the gardens are level tarmaced paths. The nearest entrance to the café is the north east one, which is by the junction of Russell Square, Woburn Place and Bernard Street (which is the street that Russell Square tube station is on). From this entrance go down the path immediately in front of you and the café is on the left. The entire café area is step free. It has a spacious outdoor seating area with free standing table and chairs. There are manual doors, which have always been open when I have visited (during the good weather). Once inside there is a long counter which is at standing height and the aisle beside it. At the till area there is another door for customers to exit. Inside there is a spacious seating area with free standing table and chairs. The café has floor to ceiling windows.

Toilets

There is a ground floor accessible toilet. It's spacious, clean with grab rails but no emergency cord. The first time I went I was standing for a while to get into the accessible toilet and when I went to ask staff to check if someone was in it, they came with me and opened it, telling me it sometimes locks itself.

Staff

I've been here a couple of times and staff are always very helpful. When I have been on my own at the counter they have seen my crutch and immediately offered to carry my tray of food to my table. Service is always friendly and welcoming.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

This our new favourite place to visit in the nice weather. The café is run by an Italian family and the food includes pizza, pasta, English breakfasts, jacket potatoes, panini and a small but delicious selection of cakes and cannoli, which are Sicilian pastries, and ice cream. They also serve a section of hot and cold drinks and my friend recommends their coffee. The café is also licenced to sell alcohol. The café is very popular especially during the week with nearby workers but we've visited during both bank holiday weekends and managed to get an outdoor seat each time. Russell Square is the largest of Bloomsbury squares, inside it has tacmaced paths and lawn areas. There is also a central fountain, bedding plants and a lot of wooden benches. The square is a few minutes from the British Museum.
