Overview

Staff willing to lend a hand to people with mobility issues. Interesting abbey for people who are interested in history, it was the home of Sir Francis Drake

Transport & Parking

Blue badge parking 150 yards from the house, there is a parking attendant directing cars to appropriate spaces when you show your Blue badge. There were plenty of spaces but it was October and so not busy.

Access

2.5

I was directed to a staff entrance that had steps to the first floor, it would not have been possible for someone who couldn't walk at all but the guide helped me out of my wheelchair and assisted my husband to get me up the stairs, about 5 or 6 steps. Then I was directed to the entrance to the ground floor which was fairly easy. I only missed one room upstairs as I wasn't able to get in there.

Toilets

3.5

There was only one disabled loo despite there being 3 different blocks for able bodied people, that was annoying as it was in the Visitor Centre at the entrance to the site so I had to go back there whereas there were non-disabled toilets around the site.

Staff

The guide who helped me was Martin a lovely man who had experience with his mother-in-law who had been a wheelchair user when she was alive. Room guides were knowledgeable and friendly.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

I think Buckland Abbey was a good place to visit, historically interesting with Drake's Drum and a Rembrandt self portrait two of the Abbey treasures on display.
