Overview
Bolton Abbey has been one of my favourite walking routes for many years. The walks that surround the ruins of what was once, a truly stunning church, are not only accessible to all, they are also filled with culture and quintessential English countryside. Not only is this place accessible to wheelchair users, it also offers a pre booking service where you are able to hire a wheelchair from the venue. They also have parking and bathroom facilities that make any trip to the Abbey extremely easy and comfortable. Whilst there are some walking trails around Bolton Abbey that are not wheelchair accessible, there are also plenty that are, making it an ideal spot for any group of people. My favourite aspect of this trail is that one minute you can be enjoying the flowing river either side of you, and then within seconds you're then immersed deep into a forest, filled with wildlife and beautiful trees. Without a doubt, this walking trail is one of my favourite places in North Yorkshire!
Transport & Parking
When my family and I go to Bolton Abbey, we tend to drive every time, so my knowledge of public transport around this area is limited. However, when we do drive, we are able to park very near to the information/welcome area in one of the blue badge parking spaces.
Access
As I mentioned before, not all of the walking routes are accessible to wheelchairs, and therefore I can't give the access rating 5 stars. However, there are plenty of walks that are accessible to wheelchairs, and so if you're looking for a day out with both wheelchair uses and non wheelchair users, this trail definitely ticks that box. In regard to restaurant facilities, I have never used these myself, but I have seen plenty of wheelchair accessible restaurants around the Abbey.
Toilets
The accessible toilets were superb! Plenty of room to manouvere the wheelchair and a well positioned handrail next to the toilet. If necessary, a carer could go into the toilet with you, but I didn't have a carer with me. The facilities were always clean and there has always been toilet roll when I've used the toilet.
Staff
In general, staff are extremely helpful and always happy to accomodate for the wheelchair. They appear to be at ease with a wheelchair, which makes me think they probably get quite a few people in wheelchairs going on these walks.
