Overview
Definitely 'doable' - we went from East Grinstead return by steam off peak. Staff were friendly, access via platform lift up into the adapted carriage. Close parking. Let down by their definition of accessible meaning a six inch step. No concessions unless a frequent user.
Transport & Parking
Parked approx ten metres from the entrance in an accessible bay. Hashtag lines to the side and rear for safe vehicle entrance/exit. (East Grinstead).
Access
The steam train that was running had a large accessible coach/carriage big enough for several wheelchair users. Entry via the onboard powered platform ramps. We had planned to have lunch in the static dining car at the entrance. It said it was accessible and it had a ramp up to it. However, you have to ask for the double doors to be opened and go up a 6 inch (maybe more) step. So we ate on the platform. The staff member said they could not use a portable ramp to meet gradient regulations ... Yet the ramp to reach the door was pretty steep and probably didn't meet regulations! Ticket counters were very high and not usable from seated. We went straight to Sheffield Park where we got if for 30 minutes. The pub is accessible and is basically a large room with a bar at one end with quite a bit of space between tables. Not a lot of character. The gift shop is accessible - just about due to tight shelving displays. We didn't go to the museum not engine shed. The route is countryside and trees with a long tunnel (the coach is lit). A number of disabled people were traveling and welcomed onto the footplate to see the engine.
Toilets
At East Grinstead (by the diner static coach) is an accessible toilet that meets building regulations. An additional accessible toilet with high seat is the only toilet on the platform that also serves everyone else. Toilets also signposted in the pub on the Sheffield Park platform.
Staff
Staff were friendly and helpful although I'm not sure it takes three to operate a platform lift!!! We were offered help to cross the line to the museum if we wanted to.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
No concessions for disabled people or carers unless you buy their own railcard which gets you and a carer 50% off (only cheaper if you do two or more trips).
