Overview
A wheelchair accessible holiday cottage with wonderful views and great wildlife. Rose Cottage at Bluebell Croft was warm, with underfloor heating and log burner. The kitchen had everything you needed, especially a washing machine and tumble dryer. The accessible bedroom was comfy and bright, the en-suite was large with a roll-in shower. A really lovely place to stay, we are already planning when to return.
Transport & Parking
You can park your car right next to the cottage. There is shingle which can cause a problem with the wheelchair, but with a bit of manoeuvring you can park right next to the flagstone pathway. Bluebell Croft is about a mile from the village of Strontian with no transport facilities to the Croft. Although the drive is steep, it is doable with the electric wheelchair and you can walk/wheel into the village.
Access
As an electric wheelchair user the access was good. Chris and Chrissie, the owners, were willing to move any furniture necessary. There was ramped access to the front door and flagstone paving all around the cottage so that you could access the patio. Inside the house the doors were wide enough, and no tight corners. The floor surfaces were floorboards, slate tiles and heavy carpet, fine for electric wheelchair. The open plan living room/kitchen was level and accessible, we pushed some furniture to the side easily. Our mobile hoist fitted easily under the bed and there was plenty of room in the bedroom for electric wheelchair and mobile hoist.
Toilets
There was plenty of space to turn in the shower room to use the toilet, although you would have to close the door to the bedroom. (There is another door through to the kitchen). The slightly sunken roll-in shower may hinder manoeuvrability, but once you have got used to the slight dip it presented no problem. There is a drop down handle and a wall bar.
Staff
The owners Chris and Chrissie were extremely helpful. When booking on the telephone they answered any queries about access and checked that everything would suit us. When we arrived they turned the bed round to accommodate our needs and would have moved any other furniture.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
We have already recommended Bluebell Croft to our friends, disabled or not! There is a wonderful outside hot-tub that has to be seen and tried to be believed, although you have to be pretty mobile to use it. There are suitable places to visit with a wheelchair and the Tourist Information Centre in Strontian is very helpful.
